VisiLean vs Microsoft Project for construction scheduling
Microsoft Project is the scheduling tool most people learn first, and plenty of construction programmes are built in it. It does the core job well: tasks, durations, dependencies and the critical path. It was never designed for what happens next on a construction site: trades committing to the week, work released only when it is ready, progress captured by the people doing it. VisiLean is built for that part. This page is the honest read on where each one fits, and how an MPP file moves across.

Using Microsoft Project for construction: where it works, where it breaks
Where it works
- Building the programme: WBS, durations, logic and calendars
- Finding the critical path and testing what-ifs
- Small and mid-sized projects with one planner
- Teams already working in the Microsoft estate
Where it breaks
- Progress comes back by email, photo and spreadsheet
- The lookahead is a filtered printout, not a commitment
- Trades cannot see or update their own work
- No view of the model, so sequence problems surface on site

Where each one wins
VisiLean wins on
- Execution on site: trades update their own tasks from the LiveSite app, so the plan reflects the day.
- Lean control: lookahead, weekly work plan, constraints and PPC run from the same schedule.
- Takt and 4D: flow by zone and the schedule played back against the model.
MS Project wins on
- Familiarity: almost every planner and project manager has used it.
- Breadth: it schedules any kind of project, not just construction.
- Fit with the Microsoft estate the rest of the business already runs.
Taking an MS Project schedule into VisiLean
- Import the MPP. Tasks, durations and logic links come across without a rebuild.
- Keep authoring in MS Project if your planners prefer it, and refresh VisiLean from the latest file.
- Run the lookahead and weekly work plan with the trades from the imported programme.
- Let site teams report progress from LiveSite, and track it in the Gantt and Table views as it happens.

Is Microsoft Project good for construction scheduling?
For building a construction schedule, yes. MS Project handles tasks, durations, dependencies and the critical path well, and most planners already know it. Where it struggles is everything after the plan is drawn: it has no field app for crews, no Last Planner lookahead, no Takt view and no link to the BIM model, so progress usually comes back by email and spreadsheet and the plan drifts from the site.
Can I import my MS Project schedule into VisiLean?
Yes. MS Project MPP files import directly into VisiLean, alongside Primavera P6 XER and Asta Powerproject files. Tasks, durations and logic links come across, so the schedule does not need to be rebuilt. Many teams keep authoring in MS Project and refresh VisiLean from the latest MPP.
What is the difference between VisiLean and MS Project?
MS Project is a general-purpose scheduling tool used across every industry. VisiLean is built for construction: the same CPM logic, plus the Last Planner lookahead and weekly work plan, Takt zones, live 4D BIM, a constraint log, PPC and a mobile field app so site teams update progress directly. MS Project is where the plan is drawn; VisiLean is where it is run.
Should we replace MS Project with VisiLean?
Not necessarily. If your planners are productive in MS Project, keep it for authoring and use VisiLean for execution on site. If MS Project is only there because nothing better was available, and site updates already flow through spreadsheets, building the programme directly in VisiLean removes a step.
Is VisiLean more expensive than MS Project?
They are priced on different models, so compare scope, not sticker. MS Project is sold as Microsoft subscriptions or licences for each person who plans in it. VisiLean is quote-based and priced against the scope of the scheduling and production-control workflow. The useful comparison is MS Project plus whatever you use today for lookaheads, site updates and progress reporting.
