Primavera P6 alternatives for construction scheduling
Primavera P6 is the scheduling tool of record on most large infrastructure and public-sector programmes, and for good reason: deep CPM, resource levelling and portfolio reporting. Teams look for an alternative for two very different reasons. Some find P6 is more tool than their projects need. Others are happy with P6 as the master but find that nothing in it helps the site team execute the plan. Those two searches end in different places, so this guide separates the tools that replace P6 from the ones that work on top of it.

Which P6 problem are you solving?
"P6 is too much for us"
Licences, database administration and a specialist planner for every change. If you choose your own scheduling tools and your projects do not need enterprise portfolio features, a lighter CPM tool can replace P6 outright.
"P6 does not reach the site"
The master is fine, often contractually required, but the lookahead, trade commitments, Takt flow and progress capture all happen outside it. Here the answer is a tool that reads the P6 master and runs execution on top.
Five alternatives to Primavera P6
VisiLean first, then the others grouped by how each relates to P6. Check the limit on each before you shortlist it.
1. VisiLean
Works on top of P6, or replaces itBest for: Contractors who need the programme executed on site: P6 XER imported live, with the Last Planner lookahead, Takt board, live 4D BIM and LiveSite field updates on the same schedule.
Watch for: No Monte Carlo risk analysis, and portfolio-level resource levelling is lighter than P6. Large PMOs usually keep P6 for both.
2. Asta Powerproject
Replaces P6 for CPM authoringBest for: UK contractors who want a full CPM planning tool with a more approachable interface, used widely on NEC and JCT programmes.
Watch for: Still planner-centric. Collaborative planning with the trades and live field updates usually happen in another tool.
3. Microsoft Project
Replaces P6 on smaller projectsBest for: Smaller programmes where a familiar Gantt and dependency tool is enough and the team already works in the Microsoft estate.
Watch for: Not built for construction. Large programmes, multi-project resourcing and enterprise reporting will push against its limits.
4. Oracle Primavera Cloud
Oracle's cloud scheduling platformBest for: Organisations that want to stay with Oracle and move scheduling into the browser, with portfolio and risk features.
Watch for: It is a different product from P6, so plan for migration and retraining rather than a straight upgrade.
5. Bentley Synchro
CPM plus 4D modellingBest for: Planning teams whose hardest problem is sequencing and simulating the build in 4D on complex infrastructure.
Watch for: 4D models are typically authored by specialists, and the weekly production conversation with the trades sits elsewhere.
How VisiLean works with a P6 master
- Import the P6 XER. WBS, activities, durations, logic links, calendars and resources come across intact.
- Run the six-week Last Planner lookahead and the weekly work plan straight from the imported programme.
- Lay out Takt zones and trade flow as another view of the same schedule, not a separate spreadsheet.
- Play the schedule back against the linked model in live 4D BIM.
- Capture progress from site in the LiveSite app, then compare it against the P6 baseline at each reforecast.
How to test a P6 alternative properly
| Test | What good looks like |
|---|---|
| Import a real XER | Logic, calendars and float match P6 without manual repair. |
| Re-run the critical path | Same critical path and finish date as P6 on the same data. |
| Update from site | A foreman can mark progress on a phone and the planner sees it the same day. |
| Round-trip at reforecast | The updated plan exports back without breaking the master. |
| Report to the client | The reports your contract requires still come out, from whichever tool holds the master. |

What is the best alternative to Primavera P6?
If the problem is getting the schedule executed on site, VisiLean adds Last Planner, Takt, 4D BIM and field updates while the master stays in P6, or runs the CPM programme itself. For a like-for-like CPM authoring tool, Asta Powerproject is the most common alternative, especially with UK contractors. For smaller projects, MS Project. For a cloud tool from the same vendor, Oracle Primavera Cloud. For 4D-led planning, Bentley Synchro.
Should we replace Primavera P6 or work alongside it?
If P6 is the contractual schedule of record, which is common on infrastructure and public-sector work, replacing it is often not your decision. In that case the useful question is what P6 does not do for the site team. If you choose your own tools and P6 is more than your projects need, a lighter CPM tool can replace it outright.
Can VisiLean replace Primavera P6?
On some projects, yes: VisiLean has its own CPM engine with forward and backward pass, float and the critical path, so a team that does not need P6 can author and run the programme in VisiLean. On large programmes it is more often an addition. P6 keeps the master, baseline and portfolio reporting, and VisiLean imports the XER to run the lookahead, Takt board and 4D view against it.
Will we lose our P6 logic if we move tools?
Test it before you commit. Import a copy of a real XER into each tool on your shortlist and check WBS, activities, durations, logic links, calendars and resources. VisiLean's XER import preserves all of these, which is why most teams use it on top of P6 rather than as a rebuild.
What does P6 not do that site teams need?
P6 is a planner's tool. It has no native Last Planner lookahead or weekly work plan, no Takt board and no live 4D BIM view, and site teams rarely update it directly. Those are the gaps most teams fill with spreadsheets, whiteboards or extra tools, and the reason a P6 alternative search often ends with a tool that works on top of P6.
